Meanwhile Sally was stunned by Trevor’s behaviour. It was not only the money that was out of control, she realised, but Trevor too. He didn’t seem to have any recollection of ordering items for the lodge. If he was to be believed that was. Sally was rapidly coming to the conclusion that she didn’t know her husband anymore. Had no idea what he did all day. Every time she went to the lodge, which was infrequently if she was honest, the renovations didn’t seem to have moved on. It looked exactly the same as it had done on her previous visit. Mind you, she always felt there was a strange aura around the lodge. It always seemed cold there. She had trouble stepping over the doorway into the building. It was as though she were wading through something. Some sort of pall.

After clearing the kitchen, she made her way up to bed. An early night was in order, she decided. She was unusually tired lately and put it down to stress. Once she’d undressed and cleaned her teeth, she fell into bed, snuggled under the covers and grabbed her kindle. But she didn’t read much, falling asleep within minutes of opening it.

But her sleep was very disturbed. Tossing and turning, she kept waking up. Overly hot one minute. Freezing cold the next. In the morning as she went to the loo, feeling decidedly unrefreshed, she became unusually nauseous. Don’t say she was coming down with a bug, on top of everything! But then she realised she’d noticed the sickness before. But it was getting worse, not better, she realised. Now she felt sick every morning. And she was putting on weight. She was now seriously chubby. Then it dawned on her. Oh, no. She couldn’t be.

Scrabbling in the cupboard she found a pregnancy test. It was still in date. So she went for it. Ten minutes later it confirmed what she had instinctively known. She was pregnant.

With her hand protecting her belly, Sally sat on the side of the bed and resolved not to stay in the relationship. She vowed to leave Trevor, now that she had a child to protect. But she needed money from him, money that could very well come from the sale of Bramble Cottage. If only she could persuade him to sell. She was convinced there was something toxic about the cottage and the lodge and it certainly wasn’t the right environment to bring a child into. She resolved to say nothing to Trevor about being pregnant for the moment.

That evening, when Trevor returned from the lodge, she looked him up and down. He was completely filthy. ‘What have you been doing?’

‘Taking down that lean to at the back of the lodge.’

‘Trevor, why are you still working on that bloody lodge? Why aren’t you chasing the architects on the barn conversion? Why aren’t’ you getting quotes for the renovation? How many more times do I have to ask you to stop focusing on that bloody little house!’

By now Sally was shouting, but she was past caring.
